I already owned a fancy Susi Swiss-made garlic press, but I often avoided it, because it was such a pain to clean. A friend in the restaurant business told me about the Kuhn Rikon, which he swore by, and enthusiastically endorsed. I balked a bit at the $35 price tag, but then saw that Kuhn Rikon had released a cheaper model. It is plastic instead of metal, but the quality of the plastic leads me to believe this model can take some punishment. The first time I used it, I was impressed with its ability to press a huge clove of garlic easily (my Susi would have "leaked" half the clove out the back of the press). When it came to cleaning it, I had to laugh at the simplicity and effortlessness of the cleaning process. The screen the garlic is pressed through is quite thin, and you don't have to push garlic bits out of the holes. Just a thorough rinse and a swipe of both sides of the screen with a sponge (yes, the screen swings out to allow easy access to both sides of the press), and the unit is clean! Get one -- it will be the best kitchen gadget you'll ever buy . . .
